I woke up this morning to a UConn alert text message that was delivered to my inbox around 3:30AM last night. Our university instated these text messages two years ago as a way to let the university know of serious incidents that have occurred on campus. They are also used to instruct us, in the case of an emergency, of where to seek safety and refuge.

Upon logging on to our university website, I discovered that there was a stabbing last night that resulted in the death of one of our students. According to the news report, a fire alarm was pulled during a university sponsored event in our Student Union. Upon evacuation of the building, a fight broke out between two groups of students. Two people were stabbed, one of which was Jasper Howard. Jasper Howard, a Miami native, plays cornerback for our football team and had just played in our Homecoming game against Louisville that same day. He passed away early this morning with the Coach by his side.

Unfortunately, circumstances like this are not uncommon. In my last three years at UConn, I have witnessed the deaths of many of my fellow students. There have been numerous accounts of violence and assaults in our small community. My freshman year, there was hit-and-run in which a drunk driver struck and killed an 18 year-old woman who lived a building that neighbored mine. My sophomore year, there were rapes on campus. Last year, an attempted rape occurred during Spring Weekend that received national attention (and a mention in Jessica Valenti's book The Purity Myth) because of the amount of bystanders that watched the event and did not interfere. And now today, another death has occurred because of an act of senseless violence. This is, by no means, an account of all of the incidents that have occurred on my campus. There are many that receive almost no attention from the news and unfortunately, many that are never even reported.

And so I ask, how many? How many of my collegiate brothers and sisters will be beaten, raped, or killed in the next coming years? How many parents will never see their children return from college? How many empty chairs will be left open at my graduation ceremony to honor those that should have been there? That deserved to be there. That never had the chance. How many more deaths will it take before we stand up as a university, a student body, and a community and scream STOP?

We can all make a difference. You just need to be willing. Today, I stand up as a Uconn Husky and pledge to stop this cycle. Will you stand too?
